President's Message December 2016

December, 2016

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE FROM MICHAEL A.  SEQUEIRA, M.D., F.A.C.E.P.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The holiday season is upon us, bringing with it a spirit of camaraderie and mutual focus on activities, observances and celebrations that unite us.

One of the best ways to pay homage to the evolution of medicine, healthcare and healers is to take a tour of the Southern California Medical Museum.

Through the collaboration and generosity of Western University of Health Sciences (WUHS), the Museum now occupies the ground floor of the University’s Nursing Science Center in historic Old Town Pomona, California. We are grateful to the administrators and faculty of WUHS who share our enthusiasm in enlightening the public as well as the medical community about the importance of appreciating the evolution of the practice of medicine in our society and our world.

The Museum is a project of SBCMS through the Physicians’ Memorial Gift and Benevolence Fund (PMGBF), supported by benefactors and donors.

The Museum contains a treasure trove of displays, artifacts and exhibits, including medical, dental and pharmacy equipment, wartime surgery kits, medical books and artwork, historical photographs, antique bottles for salves, pills, powders and elixirs and quackery devices. There’s even a life-sized diorama of a doctor’s and dentist’s office as it would have appeared in the early 1900’s.

Thanks to the efforts of Bert (Hans) Davidson, M.D. as Museum Director and Elliot Weinstein, M.D. as Museum Curator, tours are truly a fascinating way to gain full understanding of the art and science of medicine. Tours teach and entertain all ages and reinforce the legacy, culture and history of healing and medicine dating back to ancient times and spanning the decades to the current day.

All ages learn and appreciate the Museum experience, which welcomes school groups, social clubs, corporate gatherings, career and medical colleges, families and individuals. Volunteers are welcome and appreciated to assist as docents (tour guides) and hosts as well as to help maintain the many records and exhibits.

Knowledgeable docents will take your group on an adventure through medical history and scientific developments. Boy Scout Medical Merit Badge ceremonies are also conducted at the Museum. Many schools find that Medical Museum tours are an important part of their curriculum, adding a strong message of educational value for young people.

Many groups may wish to consider holding a special event at our Museum, such as an educational open house, fund-raiser or lecture followed by a tour.

Tours are available by appointment, and special arrangements may be made for groups. Members of the military and their families, along with WUHS personnel, are always admitted for free. To arrange for a tour or special event, to volunteer or to support the Museum, please contact Debbie Long at dlong@sbcms.org or 909-273-6000.

I encourage you to take advantage of this eye and mind-opening experience, which we are so fortunate to have practically in our “back yard.” After all, the practice of medicine touches everyone’s life!

However you choose to spend your holidays, on behalf of SBCMS, we wish you, your family and friends health and happiness. Thank you, as always, for your support and partnership.

Sincerely,

Michael A. Sequeira, M.D., F.A.C.E.P.

President, San Bernardino County Medical Society, 2016-17
