President's Message June 2017

JUNE 2017

“A Year of Awesome!”

Dear Members, Colleagues and Friends,

It’s absolutely astounding to believe that the past year has flown by so quickly. It has been such an honor and a privilege to serve as President of SBCMS for 2016-17, and I’m very proud of the accomplishments we’ve made during the past year:

  • Completed a new Strategic Plan to guide SBCMS for the next three years;

  • Maintained our position as the 7th largest component medical society in California and as the society with the highest number of resident and student members;

  • Helped to gather school and popular support for Prop. 56, the Tobacco Tax Initiative, and work with CMA as we fight to retain those funds for physician reimbursement;

  • Traveled to Sacramento in the spring to meet with district legislators with a record number of physicians, students and residents in attendance;

  • Integrated the Physician Advocate position to assist with members’ practice management, assessment protocols and our own direct link to the CMA’s Center for Economic Services, an extremely valuable benefit available to SBCMS members only;

  • Established the Preferred Business Partner Program, ready to welcome Thakur Law Firm, APC as our first partner;

  • Re-energized our valuable partnership with the Southern California Medical Museum (SCMM), part of our PMGBF affiliated non-profit, to increase public education about the history of medicine;

  • Advanced the “Active Shooter” training, presented and coordinated by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Medical Reserve Corps (housed within IWIN, our other community non-profit), with an audience of 300;

  • Hosted the largest-ever High Desert Meeting in March, including participation by CMA President Ruth Haskins;

  • Expanded the White Coat Spring Break Program, initiated by Marti Baum, M.D., by tripling the number of students and hosts in its second year;

I’m delighted to continue serving on the SBCMS Executive Committee as Immediate Past President, especially as we welcome Eric Hansen, D.O. to the role of President of the SBCMS Board of Directors.

Thank you for your support and collaboration in the way of advocacy outreach, particularly with Proposition 56 some very significant legislative wins. Thank you for your membership commitment which proves that “Together We are Stronger.” I wish you all a healthy and happy summer, and thank you again for the opportunity to serve such an impactful and quality organization.

Sincerely,

Michael A. Sequeira, MD, FACEP
