S. Brauer, M.D.
1927 - 2005

Retired Anesthesiologist Floyd S. Brauer,
M.D. died on December 22, 2005 at his home in Loma Linda. He was
a member of SBCMS and the California Medical Association for 32
years.
A native of Los Angeles, Dr,. Brauer graduated from
Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1951. He served in the
U.S. Air Force Medical Corps in Japan, from 1953-1955. He completed
an internship at St. Joseph's Hospital, San Francisco and Children's
Hospital of the East Bay, Oakland, 1957-1958, and an anesthesia
residency at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Dr. Brauer
practiced in Modesto, California from 1959 to 1972, where he was
active in the Stanislaus County Medical Society, serving as President
in 1971. In 1972, he joined the Anesthesiology Department at Loma
Linda University and served as Department Chairman from 1982 to
1995.
Dr. Brauer was a member of the American Medical Association,
California Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Society of
Anesthesiologists, and the Royal Society of Health. He was a Fellow
of the American College of Anesthesiology and board certified by
the American Board of Anesthesiology in 1962.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Brauer, of Loma
Linda; son Stanley Brauer; and two grandchildren. A memorial service
was held January 7, 2006 at the University Church of Seventh-Day
Adventist in Loma Linda. The family requests that memorial donations
be made to the Loma Linda University Anesthesia Research Endowment.

James
R. Savage, M.D.
1913 - 2005

James Robert Savage, MD passed away October 10,
2005 in his hometown, San Bernardino. Jim was awarded the Doctor
of Medicine from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1939
and thereby joined his father, Phillip Savage, Sr., M.D., and brother,
Phillip Savage, Jr., M.D., as the third physician in the family.
Dr. Savage was accepted for an internship at San Francisco County
Hospital. He also served as surgical resident at San Francisco County
Hospital and Tulare County Hospital, and as chief surgeon at the
San Bernardino County Hospital. In 1942 he was called to active
duty by the Air Force and discharged in 1946 with the rank of Major.
Returning to San Bernardino, Dr. Savage joined his
father and Phil Jr. in practice. In 1952, he and Phillip Jr. organized
the first multi-specialty group in San Bernardino, the San Bernardino
Medical Group, along with founding members Joel Adams, Max Goodman,
Richard Judd, Louis Knotts, and Carl Pollock. He continued to practice
there until he retired in 1978.
In 1993, the Medical Society honored Dr. Savage with
the Outstanding Contribution to the Community award for more than
50 years of service to the community. He served as a board member
for the Lighthouse for the Blind, the Civic Light Opera, YMCA -
where he developed the Indian Guide Program - and the Rotary and
Elks clubs. He served on the San Bernardino Board of Education for
over 16 years and was an advisory board member for the School of
Natural Sciences, California State University, San Bernardino, as
well as the director of the student health center. He was active
with Santa Claus, Inc. He was also secretary of the St. Bernardine
Medical Center Foundation.
Dr. Savage was husband to Barbara for 69 years
and father of two daughters, Jean Walker and Joan Johnston and son
James Savage Jr. He had 9 grandchildren. |

Maher
B. Bishai, M.D.

Maher B. Bishai, MD passed away on Thursday August
4, 2005. Born in 1920 in Egypt, Dr. Bishai attended Loma Linda School
of Medicine where he received his medical degree in 1952. He took
his residency at Saint Vincent's Hospital and Queen of Angels Hospital,
Los Angeles, California. In 1959, he established his private practice
in Upland, specializing in General, Cardio-vascular, Thoracic and
Open Heart Surgery at San Antonio Community Hospital, Loma Linda University
Medical Center, and White Memorial Medical Center in Los Angeles.
He contributed his time and philanthropy to the community through
membership in the California Medical Association, Tri-County Medical
Society, San Bernardino Medical Society, the San Antonio Hospital
Foundation, and Upland Rotary for over 15 years. He also authored
a medical textbook and donated all proceeds to charity. Dr. Bishai's
interests also included boating, photography and traveling. Survivors
include his wife Nadia, children Michael Bishai, Miranda Giurgiu,
and Mark R. Bishai, and six grandchildren. Services were held Friday,
August 12, 2005 at North Hills Seventh Day Adventist Church, Claremont.

Gerald
F. Rutten, M.D.
1926 - 2005

Retired
Yucaipa Family Practitioner Gerald F. Rutten, M.D. died on May 2,
2005 after a long illness. He was a member of SBCMS since 1956.
A native
of Devils Lake, North Dakota, he served in counter-intelligence
in the U.S. Army from 1944-46 in the Pacific. He received his medical
degree from Creighton University School of Medicine in 1954 and
interned at Queen of Angels Hospital. Dr. Rutten came to Yucaipa
in 1955 to open his practice and founded the Yucaipa-Redlands Medical
Group. He was an examiner for several insurance companies and a
member of the American Academy of General Practice. Dr. Rutten was
highly committed to his community, serving as team doctor for Yucaipa
High School for 30 years, as president of Boys Town of the Desert
and the Yucaipa Lions Club. He also was active in fundraising for
Boy Scouts of America, the March of Dimes and his church.
Survivors
include his wife of nearly 50 years, Marie, two sons and two daughters,
three sisters and two grandchildren. Family and friends have requested
that memorial donations be made to the St. Francis X. Cabrini Building
Fund or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals.

Charles
J. Honig, M.D.
1930 - 2005

Dr.
Charles John Honig passed away on February 26, 2005, from complications
of neurological disease.
A native of Czechoslovakia,
Dr. Honig received his medical degree in 1957 from Charles University
in Prague. He came to the U.S. in 1968 to intern at Ellis Hospital,
Schenectady, New York, and followed with a residency at Roosevelt
Hospital, New York, New York. In 1973, Dr. Honig moved to Los Angeles
for a Fellowship in Urology at the UCLA School of Medicine. He opened
his urology practice in San Bernardino and joined SBCMS in 1978.
Dr. Honig was a member of the American Urological Association, the
AMA, and CMA.
Memorial services
were held in his native land of the Czech Republic, and his family
and friends have requested that memorial donations be made to St.
Bernardine Medical Center. |
