Physician Recognition

SBCMS members have the opportunity to recognize excellence right here in our county! Each year the membership is asked to nominate a colleague or citizen who has:

  • Made a significant contribution to the healthcare field.
  • Displayed extraordinary professional competence.
  • Been active within SBCMS.
  • Been active in health promotion and disease prevention through public speaking presentations and/or involvement with community organizations; or
  • Made charitable, benevolent and humane gifts or paticipated in acts demonstrating a desire to help mankind.

The 2012 Outstanding Physician and Citizen Award recipients will be honored at the June 21, 2011 SBCMS Installation of Officers dinner at the Mission Inn in Riverside. Congratulations to the following people:

  • David Quam, M.D., recipient of the Nicholas P. Krikes M.D. Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Medical Society,
  • David Baylink, M.D., recipient of the William L. Cover M.D. Award for Outstanding Contribution to Medicine,
  • Rodney Borger, M.D., recipient of the Merlin A. Hendrickson M.D. Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Community, and
  • Craig Byus, PhD, recipient of the medical society's Outstanding Citizen Award.

The 2012 Presidential Award from SBCMS President, Mohan Mallam, M.D., will be announced at the Installation of Officers dinner.

Awards Criteria - physician categories are for SBCMS members only:

  • Nicholas P. Krikes, M.D. Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Medical Society - This award is given for sustained interest and participation in one or more activities of the Society over and above that expected by the membership at large. 
  • William L. Cover, M.D. Award for Outstanding Contribution to Medicine - This award is bestowed upon a physician member who has displayed forward-looking, pioneering ideas, enterprise, enthusiasm and prolonged professional stature and abilities. 
  • Merlin A. Hendrickson, M.D. Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Community - This award is given to the outstanding member who has displayed sustained interest and participation in one or more community activities over and above that expected of the membership at large. 
  • Outstanding Citizen Award - This award is presented to a lay person who has:
    • exhibited sustained interest and participation in one or more medically related activities which has benefited the members of the community, and/or
    • who has demonstrated outstanding devotion to community work, and/or
    • who has devoted a career of service to the Inland Empire. 

Presidential Award - This award is granted to an individual selected by the medical society's president, who exhibits exemplary character and commitment to the mission and purpose of the SBCMS, with unique abilities to transition impossible ideas into reality, while rising to new levels of creativity and innovation.
