Byron S. Allen, MD
Retired Apple Valley family practitioner SBCMS member Byron S. Allen, M.D. died September 9, 2000. Dr. Allen was a member of the Medical Society for 37 years.
Born in Center, Texas on March 23, 1923, Dr. Allen attended Southwest Missouri State Teachers College and the University of Houston and served with the U.S. Air Force 1941-43. His interests turned to medicine after his military tour of duty and he received his M.D. in 1951 from The Tulane University of Louisiana. He took his internship and an obstetrics residency at Fresno County Medical Center 1951-53. Dr. Allen practiced general medicine and surgery in Fresno from 1953-1963 and then moved to Apple Valley where he established his family practice and worked until he retired in 1989. He was a Charter Diplomate (1971) of the American Board of Family Practice and recertified in 1977. He was also a Charter Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Dr. Allen was Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at Louisiana State University School of Medicine 1976-77 and Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine. He joined the AMA and CMA in 1954. He served two terms on the SBCMS Board of Directors, 1971-76 and 1977-83 and was both an Alternate Delegate and Delegate to the CMA House of Delegates 1974-76 and 1977-80. He was also a Delegate to the California Academy of Family Practice House of Delegates.
Dr. Allen was active in civic affairs as President of the Apple Valley Rotary Club in 1972 and was selected Man of the Year in 1973. He served as President of the Riverside-San Bernardino Chapter of the CAFP 1981-82, and as President of the Medical Staff at St. Mary’s Desert Valley Hospital 1982-83. The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors named him Outstanding Family Physician, San Bernardino County in 1982. That same year, the San Bernardino County Medical Center presented to Dr. Allen their Gierman-McKee Memorial Award for outstanding support to the teaching of family medicine by a community physician. He also received a 25-year service award from the American Academy of Family Practice in 1981.
A widower following the death of his wife, Alice in 1995, Dr. Allen is survived by his son, Byron, and two daughters, Kathryn and Diane.
Marshall C. Parker, MD
Dr. Marshall Craig Parker died August 10, 2000 at Redlands Community Hospital. A native of Lynnwood, California, Dr. Parker was a board-certified family practitioner with the Beaver Medical Group for eight years.
Dr. Parker received his medical degree in 1992 from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He took his internship and residencies at Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Fontana. Dr. Parker joined SBCMS and CMA in 1996. He was also a member of the AMA and the American Academy of Family Physicians. Survivors include his father, Marshall, of Las Vegas; and two brothers, Darren of Ontario and Kelvin of Hollywood.
James Alderfer, MD
Retired Upland family practitioner and SBCMS member A. James Alderfer, M.D. died October 10 at his home.
Dr. Alderfer graduated in medicine from the University of California Medical School, San Francisco in 1943. He interned at San Francisco City and County Hospital and took residencies in medicine and surgery at San Bernardino County Hospital from 1946-49. He was board certified with the American Board of Family Practice in 1974.
Dr. Alderfer was chief of staff for San Antonio Community Hospital in 1956. He was a member of SBCMS and CMA for 51 years. He was a member of the San Bernardino/Riverside Blood Bank Board, the Advisory Board of the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, the Price Foundation Board, the Board of San Gabriel/Pomona Valley Youth for Christ, and the University Club of Claremont. He served as chairman of the Board of Upland College for 12 years. He served in the Army as Captain in the Medical Corps during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia; his son, Ray; two daughters, Jean and Betty; three sisters and eight grandchildren.

HMO Complaints
The Department of Managed Health Care has hired 100 people in the HMO public help-line system. They are capable of communicating in 150 languages and are now open 365 days/24 hours a day to receive patient complaints about HMOs. The numbers for consumer complaints: 1-800-400-0815. The Commission on Cancer Multidisciplinary Program of the American College of Surgeons appointed otolaryngologist Lisa Perry-Gilkes, M.D. to a three-year position as cancer liaison physician for the Hospital Cancer Program at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.
Kaiser Permanente recently honored Fontana internist Edward Hess, M.D. with the 1999 Physician Exceptional Contribution Award for his contributions to health care in San Bernardino County.
