Nicholas P. Krikes, M.D. Award for
Outstanding Contribution to the Medical Society

presented to

Stanley E. Bishop, M.D.

This twenty seventh day of June, in the year two thousand one

Dr. Stanley Bishop is a physician leader. It is for his outstanding dedication to, participation in, and leadership of the Medical Society and CMA that his colleagues gather to honor him tonight.

Dr. Bishop believes strongly in the value of organized medicine. He is a former SBCMS Board member, representing the physicians in District 3. A quiet, well-liked, highly respected individual, he has at all times been concerned over the issues that face the Medical Society. He joined our Public Service Committee to help mediate patient complaints and our Historical Committee to help preserve the history of medicine and the Medical Society. Although formally retired, he continues to serve on the Historical Committee, which he joined when it was formed in 1981. Throughout his tenure as Historical Committee Chairman (1987-1992), the committee made exceptional progress largely owing to his productive and even-handed leadership. While chairman, Dr. Bishop furthered a series of successful Physician Arts, Crafts and Hobbies Exhibits held at the Medical Society and volunteered a display on the Society's outside grounds of his exciting collection of classic automobiles. In recent years he headed the committee's Finance Subcommittee.

Dr. Bishop's talent for leadership is evident when one considers his experience: past-president of the Academy for Professional Standards, a PSRO for three counties; Surveyor for the CMA's Hospital CME Accreditation, CALS Surveyor for JCAHO, CMA and the Department of Health Services, and member of the California Statewide Review Council. Dr. Bishop also served on CMA's Medi-Cal TAR Committee and Committee on California Coalition for Mental Health and on the faculty of CMA's Quality Assurance Seminars. He chaired the Department of Ophthalmology at San Bernardino Community Hospital and St. Bernardine Medical Center, and is a former Chief of Staff and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Community Hospital.

In 1994 Dr. Bishop became Interim CEO/Administrator of San Bernardino Community Hospital. In 1995, soon after he retired from his private practice of ophthalmology, he accepted a position as the hospital's Senior Vice-President for Medical Affairs, which he held until the hospital changed ownership. He is presently a consultant for the Loma Linda University hospitals.

It is an honor, joy and privilege to present to Dr. Stanley Bishop, on behalf of the membership of the San Bernardino County Medical Society, our highest award, the Nicholas P. Krikes, M.D. Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Medical Society.
