Benjamin Nepomuceno, MD
1925 – 2000
High Desert Urologist Benjamin Nepomuceno, M.D. passed away December 13, 2000. He joined the Medical Society in 1963 and was a retired member at the time of his death.
A native of Boac, Marinduque, Philippines, Dr. Nepomuceno obtained his medical degree from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine in 1952. He took his internship at the Philippine General Hospital in Manila. A surgical residency at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London, Connecticut was followed by a urological residency at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Dr. Nepomuceno returned to the Philippines to practice from 1959-1961; he was a member of the Philippine Medical Association. He received his California license in 1962.
Dr. Nepomuceno was affiliated with Barstow Community Hospital, St. Mary Desert Valley Hospital, and Victor Valley Community Hospital where he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors. Dr. Nepomuceno was a generous benefactor to his native country and the High Desert community where he was a leader in community affairs. He was a member of the Desert Communities United Way Alexis de Tocqueville Society. Dr. Nepomuceno gave much of his time to charitable causes throughout the Victor Valley from helping the High Desert Foundation for the Physically Handicapped, St. Mary’s Regional Catholic School, assisting the High Desert Homeless Shelters in Victorville and Barstow, Catholic Charities and Apple Valley Animal Shelter in addition to being a Barstow College benefactor. He retired from practice in 1995.
Survivors include his wife, Lourdes.
Han Quang Tran, M.D.
1946 – 2000
SBCMS was recently notified that Victorville Pediatrician Han Quang Tran, M.D. died May 8, 2000 following emergency abdominal surgery.
Dr. Tran was born in Thua Thien, Vietnam. He earned a medical degree in 1973 from the Fac De Med, Univ Dee Hue, in Hue, Vietnam. Dr. Tran worked in biochemical genetics research at the University of Tennessee Department of Medical Biology from 1980 to 1989. He then took his internship at the TC Thompson Children’s Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee and completed pediatric residencies at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, Brooklyn, New York and Los Angeles County USC Medical Center. He completed a postgraduate fellowship in clinical genetics at the Los Angeles County USC Medical Center in 1994. Dr. Tran was affiliated with Victor Valley Community Hospital, the High Desert Valley Medical Group, and St. Mary Desert Valley Hospital.
Dr. Tran joined the Medical Society in 1994 as a House Officer transfer (CHOMS) from Los Angeles County Medical Association. He was board certified in Pediatrics and Medical Genetics and was a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the California Chapter of the AAP, the American Society of Human Genetics, and was a Fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics.
He is survived by his wife, Cam-Quynh Tran-Quang.

LLU Health Care Memory Loss Clinic
Loma Linda University Health Care has announced the formation of a comprehensive Memory Loss Clinic. The Memory Loss Clinic specializes in the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and management of memory loss diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, frontal-temporal dementia, and Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease. The Clinic brings together all relevant specialties including internal medicine, geriatrics, neurology, and neuropsychology in a multi-disciplinary setting. The Memory Loss Clinic also provides a support resource for the patient’s family and caregivers.
James Larsen, MD and Daniel Giang, MD collaborated to develop the clinic. Dr. Larsen is board certified in internal medicine and geriatric medicine. Dr. Giang is a board-certified neurologist with fellowship training in behavioral neurology. Neuropsychology, psychiatry and social work are available through the clinic as needed to assist in meeting the needs of the patient and family.

SBCMS congratulates Lauren Simon, MD, MPH, recipient of the Volunteer in Action, Community Volunteer Education Medal of Honor Award for 2001. The Education Medal of Honor program annually recognizes individuals and groups who give outstanding service and support to public education within San Bernardino County.
Dr. Simon specializes in Family Practice and Sports Medicine with Loma Linda University Department of Family Practice. A graduate of Hahnemann University School of Medicine, she took her internship and residency at Loma Linda University Medical Center and Kaiser Foundation Hospital, Fontana. She joined SBCMS and CMA as a House Officer in 1991 and transferred to active status in 1994.
