Arnold
W. Abbott, M.D.
1918 - 2001
SBCMS member Arnold W. Abbott, M.D. died July 23, 2001 in Laguna Hills. A Family Practitioner, he had a private practice in the Abbott Medical Building in Ontario until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of SBCMS and CMA for 54 years.
A native of Pomona, California and a graduate of the University of Redlands, Dr. Abbott received his medical degree from the University of Southern California in 1943 and interned at Los Angeles County General Hospital. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1943 to 1946 and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Chevalier of the Order of the Crown (Belgium). He was active on the staff of San Antonio Community Hospital and was President of the Medical Staff in 1959. Dr. Abbott was a member of the AMA and the American Academy of Family Practice. He was also active in the Model A Ford Club of America and the Ontario Kiwanis Club.
Louis
C. Altman, M.D.
1937 - 2001
Louis C. Altman, M.D. passed away on June 8, 2001 of cancer. Doctor Altman joined the Medical Society in 1968 when he transferred his membership to SBCMS from the Los Angeles County Medical Society. He specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Altman was born in New York City and received his medical degree in 1962 from the State University of New York. He came to California in 1963 and took his internship at Harbor General Hospital followed by a residency at Los Angeles Presbyterian Hospital. From 1966 to 1968 he served as Captain in the U.S. Army. He was board certified in 1969. Dr. Abbott served on the medical staffs of San Antonio Community Hospital, Doctor's Hospital of Montclair, and Ontario Community Hospital. He was a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the California Medical Association. In 1995 Dr. Altman retired and spent his golden years in Leucadia, California.
Stanley
E. Bishop, M.D.
1936 - 2001
Stanley E. Bishop, M.D. died September 14, 2001 at his home in Lytle Creek. He served the Inland Empire community for more than 30 years as an Ophthalmologist in Rialto and San Bernardino. SBCMS counted him as a member for 36 years.
A native of Detroit, Michigan, Dr. Bishop earned his medical degree from Wayne College of Medicine, Detroit in 1960. He stayed in Detroit to complete his internship and residency in Ophthalmology at Harper Hospital. The military called him to duty, and Dr. Bishop served in the U.S. Army as Captain from 1962-63. Following his discharge, he came to California and in 1964, joined the staff of San Bernardino Community Hospital and St. Bernardine Medical Center, and established his private practice of Ophthalmology. He was board certified in 1969.
Dr. Bishop spent many years serving the Community Hospital of San Bernardino as Chief of the Medical Staff, Member and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Interim CEO/Administrator, and, after retiring from practice in April 2001, he served as Vice President of Medical Affairs. Most recently he worked as a consultant for Loma Linda University Medical Center. Dr. Bishop was an avid car enthusiast; he raced cars in his younger years, owned several classic automobiles, and was involved in a number of car clubs.
At SBCMS, Dr. Bishop served as a member of the Board of Directors, the Public Service Committee, and the Historical Committee, which he also chaired for several years. He was a past-president of the Academy for Professional Standards, a PSRO for three counties; Surveyor for the CMA's Hospital CME Accreditation, CALS Surveyor for JCAHO, CMA and the Department of Health Services, and member of the California Statewide Review Council. Dr. Bishop also served on CMA's Medi-Cal TAR Committee and Committee on California Coalition for Mental Health and on the faculty of CMA's Quality Assurance Seminars. In June of this year, SBCMS honored Dr. Bishop with the 2001 Nicholas P. Krikes, M.D. Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Medical Society.
William
F. Boyle, M.D.
1917 - 2001
The Medical Society was recently notified that William F. Boyle, M.D. passed away on February 21, 2001 near his home in Oakland. A specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Boyle joined SBCMS in 1972. He retired in 1983 after 35 years of practice in Philadelphia, Taiwan, and Claremont.
Dr. Boyle was born in Scranton Pennsylvania. He attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and received his M.D. in 1944. He took his internship at Nazareth Hospital in Philadelphia and completed OB-Gyn residencies at Walter Reed Army Hospital, Washington D.C. and Germantown Hospital, Philadelphia. This was followed by a postgraduate fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Obstetrics-Gynecology in Philadelphia. Dr. Boyle served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in the South Pacific and at Walter Reed Hospital, Washington D.C. He was Senior Consultant in Obstetrics-Gynecology at the Veteran's General Hospital in the National Defense Medical School, Taipei, Taiwan from 1969-1971. He spent 18 years in private practice in Philadelphia in General Practice. Dr. Boyle was a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He also served on the medical staff of the California Institution for Women at Frontera, California.
Owen
J. O'Connor, M.D.
1917 - 2001
Dr. Owen J. O'Connor, M.D., former chief of staff at both San Bernardino County Medical Center and St. Bernardine Medical Center, died July 23, 2001 of complications from a stroke. Dr. O'Connor was a private family practitioner and surgeon and an active member of SBCMS for 56 years.
Born in Portland, Oregon, Dr. O'Connor graduated in medicine in 1943 from the University of Oregon Medical School. He then came to San Bernardino for his internship and residency at San Bernardino County Hospital. The military called him to active duty in 1945 and he served two years in the U.S. Army as Captain in the Medical Corps and as Assistant Chief of Surgery at Tripler General Hospital in Honolulu. After his discharge in 1947, Dr. O'Connor established a private practice in San Bernardino. He spent two years as assistant surgeon at the Beaver Medical Clinic 1949-51, and then returned to his private practice in San Bernardino. In 1982 he became Attending Consultant for the San Bernardino County Medical Center's Department of Family Practice.
One of Dr. O'Connor's prime interests was the education of residents in Family Practice at the County Medical Center. His dedication and interest in his students earned him the Golden Apple Award as best teacher in 1983-84. He became a member of the Board of Directors of the Blood Bank of San Bernardino-Riverside Counties in 1959 and served as Vice President of the Board in 1985.
Dr. O'Connor was one of the founding fathers of the San Bernardino County Foundation For Medical Care, and he officiated as President of the Foundation in 1964, 1965 and 1966. He also served as Chairman of the Board of the Inland Health Plan in 1981-82. Other organizations he served include the Uptown Lion's Club of San Bernardino and the United Fund Drives being Co-Chairman and Chairman of the Medical Division. In 1989 he was the recipient of the SBCMS Outstanding Contribution to the Community Award.
John
E. Olson, Jr., M.D.
1922-2001
Upland Family Practitioner John E. Olson, Jr., M.D. died August 11, 2001 in Upland. He joined SBCMS and CMA in 1973.
Dr. Olson was born in Logan, Utah. He enlisted in the Army Corps of Engineers in 1943, serving with the Occupation Forces in Germany and Austria. Upon his discharge in 1946, he pursued his dream to become a physician. As a graduate of Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, Illinois in 1948, he completed his residency at Riverside County Hospital and additional surgical training, and was Chief Resident. In 1955 he established a private medical practice as a family physician in Glendora, California. In 1961 he was elected to the Glendora School Board.
Dr. Olson and his family returned to Utah to practice in 1963. He was a delegate to the Utah State Medical Society and a charter diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice. He moved his family to Upland in 1973 and established a medical practice from which he retired in 1994. Dr. Olson was on the medical staff of Doctors Hospital of Montclair and San Antonio Community Hospital. He served on the governing board at Doctors Hospital and was Chief of Staff for two consecutive years. He also served in numerous leadership positions in his community and church, including the High Council of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Upland Stake.

Dr. Lisa Perry-Gilkes received the League of Women Voters' 2001 Citizens of
Achievement Award in a ceremony at the San Bernardino County Government Center
on October 21. Dr. Perry-Gilkes specializes in Otolaryngology and Facial Plastic
Surgery at the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton. She chairs the Executive
Committee of the African American Health Initiative, represents District 3 on
the SBCMS Board of Directors, and serves as an Alternate Delegate to the CMA
from District 3.
Ralph M. Kleinman, M.D., retired family physician in Upland, California and long time member of SBCMS, was recently honored by the American Academy of Family Physicians for 40 years membership in the organization. The AAFP also recognized him for his many years of caring and involvement in his community Dr. Kleinman is a member of the SBCMS Historical Committee where he heads the Library Subcommittee.
