2002 Award for
Outstanding Contribution to the Community
presented to
Lisa C. Perry-Gilkes, M.D.
This twenty-sixth day of June, in the year two thousand two
Physician, teacher, mentor, concerned citizen – all of these
attributes describes the recipient of this award. And not to be
overlooked are her many contributions to organized medicine.
Lisa Perry-Gilkes is known for “making things happen.” Throughout
her career, she has worked with more than a dozen professional
groups and philanthropic organizations. She is the President of
the James Wesley Vines, Jr., M.D. Medical Society, a component
of the National Medical Association comprised of approximately
125 Inland Empire African American doctors. She is President of
the Inland Empire Chapter of Jack & Jill of America (the nation’s
oldest African-American family organization), Parliamentarian for
the San Bernardino Valley Chapter of Links, Inc. and a member of
the San Bernardino County Arts Foundation. She has also served
on the executive boards of The Episcopal Church Women at Trinity
Episcopal Church, Associates of the Redlands Bowl, and the Arts
Council for San Bernardino County. She also donates her time to
serve as a mentor to students.
Dr. Perry-Gilkes is the Director of the African American Health
Initiative, a project of the Inland Wellness Information Network
(IWIN) founded by the SBCMS. AAHI is a significant community-based
resource focused solely on improving health among the African American
community. Over 30 organizations throughout San Bernardino communities
work on the initiative to bring data, service coordination, expertise
and other resources to address the health disparities of African
Americans.
Lisa has been actively involved in the San Bernardino County Medical
Society, the California Medical Association and the American Medical
Association since joining in 1992. She has chaired the SBCMS Young
Physician Section (YPS) and served as the Chair of the CMA’s
YPS and represented that organization as a delegate to the AMA.
She authored and co-authored resolutions for the CMA and the AMA,
and in 1999 the AMA honored her for her energetic work with this
group. She is the SBCMS Secretary, serves on the Board of Directors
and as a CMA Alternate Delegate.
Dr. Perry-Gilkes has numerous awards and honors: National Health
Committee Appointment Jack & Jill of America, Inc. 2001; League
of Women Voters of San Bernardino 2001 Citizens of Achievement;
AMA Emerging Leaders Award 2001; Service Citation from the San
Bernardino County Board of Supervisors of Dedicated Service to
The Arts Council 2001; and the AMA Community Service Award 1999.
Lisa Perry-Gilkes is an outstanding humanitarian and a model
for all physicians. She is a microcosm of what women are contributing
to this world. It is said that her central theme in life is to
bring comfort to all, whether it be from her medical expertise
or with her compassion, generosity and understanding. It is for
these reasons we are pleased to present the 2002 SBCMS Award
for Outstanding Contribution to the Community to Lisa C. Perry-Gilkes,
M.D.
