The Southern California Physician, August, 2002

Dear Fellow Medical Society Members,

As incoming president I am committed to the duties of the office of the President, including the following individual strategies in the coming year:

• Continue to encourage dialog with our physician members and potential members-such parlance should cover specific efforts undertaken by the Society and CMA for members in an effort to retain and promote membership, supporting activities that reflect member preferences, deriving such knowledge from survey, focus group, & local forum
• Join the CMA in legislative advocacy for such issues as physician reimbursement and preservation of MICRA legislation, by participating as a legislative key contact and by attending the annual day in Sacramento
• Promote efforts to identify and improve local public health problems through our existing programs (African American Health Initiative, IWIN, Live and Then Give Program), and explore evolving issues impacting upon our community including bioterrorism and disaster responsiveness, domestic violence, child abuse, and elder abuse.
• Take part in an active dialog with local government leaders to address such issues as local disaster responsiveness, the appropriate functioning of local government-sponsored health care entities and support agencies such as the public health department, ARMC, Behavioral Health, Aging and Adult Services, Public Social Services, Child Protective Services...
• Join with CMA in the struggle to preserve physician rights while protecting the public from “bad” physicians, related to the Medical Board reauthorization controversy (SB 1950).
• Participate in organized medical leadership forums such as the annual CMA House of Delegates and the statewide medical society President’s forum
