REDLANDS FAMILY PHYSICIAN HONORED AS HERO OF MEDICINE On Sunday, March 10, 2002 Ronald P. Bangasser, MD, Redlands family physician and the current President-Elect of the California Medical Association, received the 2002 Pride in the Profession Award for his dedicated contributions to the community as a medical healer and public leader. The American Medical Association (AMA) and the Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative sponsor the award. The award was presented to Dr. Bangasser during a special session of the AMA's National Leadership Conference at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. "The Pride in the Profession Award salutes physicians who are dedicated to the highest principles of the medical profession. The award recognizes extraordinary efforts to provide urgently needed health care services," said AMA President Richard F. Corlin, MD. "A Pride in the Profession Award recipient is an exemplary physician who serves as role model for all of us in the health care profession." Dr. Bangasser was cited for spearheading a collaborative effort between the San Bernardino County Medical Society (SBCMS), Riverside County Medical Association and San Bernardino County Bar Association on domestic violence awareness. Mentoring medical students, helping to fund programs to reduce teen pregnancies and aiding senior citizens are among Dr. Bangassers many other achievements. Dr. Bangasser is a past-president of SBCMS and an AMA Delegate. The San Bernardino Medical Society and Riverside County Medical Association nominated Dr. Bangasser for the Pride in the Profession Award. In the nomination, SBCMS and RCMA presidents, Jay E. Shankar, MD, and William Cherry, MD, wrote, "He is highly respected by his peers, his friends, his patients, elected officials and members of the community. Dr. Bangasser exemplifies the true leader in the physician community and the community-at-large." The Pride in the Profession Awards honor physicians who, through their service, bring a sense of pride to the medical profession and whose devotion to the highest values of medical practice have healed patients, enriched communities and inspired colleagues. Dr. Bangasser donated his award to "Live and Then Give," a partnership designed to improve health and save lives by making more donated organs and tissues available in the Inland Empire. The San Bernardino County Medical Society, Riverside County Medical Association, and IWIN implemented this program to increase the number of pledged donors in the Inland Empire. |
