Wilderness Medicine Topic of Museum Open House
A
full house of approximately 200 physicians and members of the public
attended the sixth annual Medical Museum and Library's Open House
celebration on Sunday, February 2, 2003. It was a tremendous success
and it gave everyone an opportunity to stop and appreciate the efforts
of our Historical Committee in preserving the history of the development
of medicine.
The audience was mesmerized with Dr. David
Peck's account of "The Lewis and Clark Expedition - Wilderness
Medicine in Early America." A San Diego urgent-care physician,
Dr. Peck is an expert speaker on wilderness
medicine and is the author of "Or Perish in the Attempt-Wilderness
Medicine in the Lewis and Clark Expedition." He related the
medical mysteries and mishaps encountered during the expedition
and spiced his narrative with an informative and sometimes graphic
slide presentation.
Afterward, visitors had the opportunity to tour the museum with
docents who explained the medical devices, instruments and old books
on display. The SBCMS Alliance served as greeters and graciously
served refreshments.
The medical museum is a project of the SBCMS Historical Committee
and is supported by donations and funds through the Physicians'
Memorial, Gift and Benevolence Fund, a 501(c) (3) charitable organization.
Donations of medical equipment, medical books published prior to
1930 and monetary contributions are encouraged. All donations are
tax deductible. If you would like further information or would like
to arrange a group tour, contact the Medical Society at (909) 825-6526.
