San Bernardino County Medical Society
2003 Nicholas P. Krikes, M.D. Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Medical Society

presented to

Kenneth C. Lane, M.D.

This twenty sixth-day of June, in the year two thousand three

Dr. Kenneth C. Lane is a true leader and deeply committed to every cause in which he participates. Involved in organized medicine since medical school and active in the Medical Society since 1988, he was elected President in 1999. Dr. Lane was a member of numerous committees, including the Membership Development and Communications committees, but is particularly recognized for his leadership of the Legislative/LOPAC and Young Physician committees. As a young physician, convinced of the immediate need for young physicians to get intimately involved in organized medicine, he represented SBCMS in the Young Physicians Sections of the CMA and AMA. Subsequently, he was elected a delegate to the CMA, a YPS AMA delegate, and a CMA Trustee. He served on the Executive Committee of the CMA's YPS. In 1990, Dr. Lane founded our Society's Young Physician Committee and was the first YPC Representative to serve on the SBCMS Board of Directors.

Dr. Lane chaired our Legislative Commission/LOPAC Committee with an energy matching that of his immediate predecessor, Dr. Jerry Taurek, organizing legislative workshops and candidate interviews. By his example, he influenced his colleagues to develop a keen interest in and knowledge of legislative issues and cultivate a close relationship with our legislators. He also served CMA on the CALPAC Executive Committee and Board of Directors, the Council on Legislation, Long-Range Planning & Review, and several Technical Advisory committees.

In 2000, Dr. Lane and others organized the Community Health Coalition of San Bernardino County to bring the health care industry in San Bernardino together to improve the health of the citizens in our county, primarily by reducing heart disease. They were successful in procuring $2 million of the Tobacco Master Settlement for indigent health care and tobacco programs, and received a grant to develop a model community-based program to reduce HTN. The CHC was also instrumental in bringing a state funded program into San Bernardino County to pay for prostate treatment for uninsured men. Through the CHC, the health care community has come to know SBCMS and all it does for physicians and the community.

Finally, it is for his many years of dedicated service, support, and participation in SBCMS and organized medicine that the members of the San Bernardino County Medical Society honor Dr. Kenneth C. Lane with its highest award, the Nicholas P. Krikes, M.D. Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Medical Society.

Frank Randolph, M.D.
