Outstanding Contribution to Medicine

presented to

John Mace, M.D.

This twenty sixth-day of June, in the year two thousand three

Dr. John Mace's academic contributions are legion. It is the Medical Society is privilege to honor him tonight as a physician leader and educator, whose tireless efforts for the improvement of health conditions in children is known far and wide.

As a pediatric endocrinologist, Dr. Mace has held a major interest in children with growth and maturation deficits. In addition, his research has resulted in the publishing of several pioneering papers that have changed the course of clinical management of these children. He has maintained a special interest in diabetic children that has culminated in his continued management and support of a summer camp for diabetic children.

Dr. Mace has been the guiding force behind the establishment of the Loma Linda University Children's Medical Center and played a major role in forming the Foundation, which has provided much of the financial support required. He has devised and supported a team that has served as the sole pediatric agency for abused children in the Inland area. He has been active in several international groups that seek to improve the quality of life for children in such diverse regions as South America, Tibet, Africa, and Eastern Europe. For 20 years Dr. Mace has been chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Loma Linda University School of Medicine and built the department from less than 10 to over 50 members.

Dr. Mace is an acknowledged contributor to the research base of his discipline and much in demand both nationally and internationally as a lecturer on research topics. His professional associations include the Western Society for Pediatric Research, the Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society, the Hinterland Pediatric Society, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is a past-president of the San Bernardino Foundation for Medical Care and a past-president of the American Diabetes Association, Inland Empire Chapter.

It is the San Bernardino County Medical Society's honor to recognize John Mace, M.D., a member of our organization for 28 years, for his considerable contributions to the medical profession by proudly presenting to him the 2003 William L. Cover, M.D. Award for Outstanding Contribution to Medicine.
