Retired
SBCMS member Peter J. Maturo, M.D. died March 14, 2003 at Scripps
Memorial Hospital of heart failure. He was an obstetrician and gynecologist.
Born in New Castle, Pennsylvania, Dr. Maturo was working as a chemist
in Detroit when the United States entered World War II in 1941,
and so he promptly enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and served
in the weather service for nearly five years. He then enrolled in
the Medical School at the University of Pittsburgh, graduating in
1950. He undertook his postgraduate medical training in Obstetrics
and Gynecology from 1950-1954 at South Side Hospital and Magee Hospital
in Pittsburgh, Cook County Lying-in Hospital in Chicago, Knickerbocker
Hospital, New York, and New York Poly Clinic Hospital. He was board
certified in 1955.
Dr. Maturo's first obstetrics and gynecology practice was in New
Castle. When he left, he was Associate Attending Obstetrician and
Gynecologist at Jameson Memorial and New Castle Hospital. During
this time, he was also Vice-President of the Lawrence County Medical
Society and Medical Director of the Disaster Program in New Castle.
Dr. Maturo said he "left a thriving practice in New Castle
to come to San Bernardino in 1959 because I like the climate very
much and (am) confident of the growth potentials of this area."
He established himself in the community, joined SBCMS, and served
on peer review committees, including the CMA Panel of Peer Review
Physicians. He was also a member of Arrowhead Country Club and founded
the Via Dolorosa Society of La Jolla, an organization dedicated
to preserving the memory of the path Jesus took to the site of his
crucifixion. In 1998, Dr. Maturo began a project with the Via Dolorosa
Society to construct life-size bronze recreations of the 14 Stations
of the Cross. Seven have been completed. He was also a member of
the CMA, AMA, the World Medical Association, International Fertility
Association, the American Gynecology Society, and the American Institute
of Hypnosis. Locally, he was a member of the Lions Club, the American
Legion, the Chamber of Commerce, and the National Orange Show Board
of Directors.
Survivors include his wife, M. Lee Maturo, a son, three daughters,
a sister and 15 grandchildren.
