Walk the Dream
The
African American Health Initiative (AAHI) held their third annual
"Walk the Dream" health walk and mini health fair on January
11, 2003. It began with a rally at the Reverend Martin Luther King,
Jr. statue adjacent to the San Bernardino City Hall. The program
included Reverend James Markham, Terry Benjamin, and Councilwoman
Betty Dean Anderson. Certificates of appreciation from U.S. Senator
Barbara Boxer and Congresswoman Joe Baca were presented to AAHI
Project Coordinator Dr. Cherry Houston.
After the walk the participants returned to the Carousel Mall for
a mini health fair; heart-healthy exercise led by Reverend Gordon
Laine, Director of the Loveland Fitness Center and African Ancestry
Manifesting Our Excellence (FAME). Other participants included Donna
Marino who conducted a healthy cooking session.
Organizations who participated in the mini health fair include
the African American Health Initiative, the American Cancer Society,
Black Infant Health, Desert Sierra Breast Cancer, First Chance/Y-CHOW,
Four-D-Success Academy, Inland Empire Health Plan, Inland Wellness
Information Network, "Live & Then Give" Organ &
Tissue Donor Awareness Program, MedicaLatina, Molina Health Care
of California, Parks & Recreation Department, People's Choice,
the San Bernardino County Medical Society, and "Say Sistah"
UJIMA.
Medical students from Loma Linda University School of Medicine,
nursing students from Four-D Success Academy, and Black Infant Health
personnel conducted 100 blood pressure screenings and 43 diabetes
screenings.
The purpose of AAHI's health walks is to encourage the community
to walk for health and modify their dietary lifestyle. In America
heart disease is the leading cause of death. African Americans are
in the forefront for hypertension, stroke and other cardiovascular
diseases.
