W. Gutekunst, M.D. 1915 - 2003
Retired
San Bernardino Family Practitioner Fred W. Gutekunst, M.D. passed away on Monday,
November 26, 2003. He was a member of the Medical Society for 57 years. Dr.
Gutekunst was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania and graduated from Loma Linda University
Medical School in 1939. He took his internship and residency at San Bernardino
County Hospital. At the outbreak of WWII he entered the Army Medical Corps and
served in the South Pacific for five years. Following his discharge, he returned
to the County Hospital in 1946 to complete his surgical residency. Dr. Gutekunst
served as Chief of Staff at both St. Bernardine and San Bernardino Community hospitals
and served on numerous committees. He was board certified by the American Board
of Family Practice in 1977 and 1983. He was a member of the AMA, CMA, American
Academy of Family Practice, the Southwest OB-Gyn Society, and the SBCMS Historical
Committee. His wife, Mary, his daughter Dona, four stepchildren, five grandchildren
and one great-grandson survive him. Boleslaw H.
Liwnicz, M.D. 1940 - 2003 Boleslaw
H. Liwnicz, M.D. died October 21, 2003. He specialized in Pathology and Neuropathology
at Loma Linda University Medical Center and Loma Linda Community Hospital. He
joined SBCMS and CMA in 1991. A native of Moscow, Russia, Dr. Liwnicz earned
his medical degree from the University of Warsaw (Akad Med. Warszawie), Poland
in 1964. He completed residencies in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Albert
Einstein/Lincoln Hospital 1973-75, Montefiore Hospital Medical Center 1975-76,
both in Bronx, New York, and at Stanford University Hospital 1976-78. In 1990
he completed a Postgraduate Fellowship at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, Rochester,
Minnesota. Dr. Liwnicz held teaching positions at the University of Cincinnati
Medical Center, where he practiced in the Department of Pathology 1978-90, and
Loma Linda University Medical Center. He was board certified by the American Board
of Pathology. He was a member of the International Academy of Pathology, the American
Association of Neuropathologists, and the Canadian Association of Neuropathology. Survivors
include his wife, Regina G. Liwnicz, M.D.
