Hazel J. Berglund, M.D.
1910 - 2003

When Dr. Hazel Berglund passed away on December 2, 2003 at age 92, she was still working four hours one day a week at Patton State Hospital doing what she has done for decades: providing physical therapy to people in state mental institutions.

Dr. Berglund was born in Chicago, Illinois. First a nurse, she went on to graduate from Loma Linda University (College of Medical Evangelists) in 1943, at a time when it was not socially acceptable for women to become doctors. She completed a rotating internship at Los Angeles County General Hospital in 1946 and residencies at White Memorial Hospital, Loma Linda University Medical Center and one year at Rancho Los Amigos.

A July 26, 2001 article in The Sun newspaper reveals that Dr. Berglund spent 10 years in New York, driving a truck to deliver health care to people in outlying regions that lacked adequate roads and there weren't enough physicians to handle the patient workload. She worked as a psychiatrist for 16 years at Lanterman Development Center in Pomona before joining the Patton staff in 1970. She was also an instructor in orthopedic rehabilitation at Loma Linda University. Dr. Berglund was a Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, a member of the American Medical Women's Association, and the American Association of Mental Retardation (AAMD). She joined CMA and SBCMS in 1957. Dr. Berglund and her late husband, Glenn Dunn, attended many, if not all, of our medical society's general membership meetings. She enjoyed mountain climbing before arthritis limited her physical activity.

Survivors include her stepdaughter, Debra Juan.
