William L. Cover, MD Award for Outstanding Contribution to Medicine

presented to

J. Bruce Beckwith, M.D.

This twenty-third day of June, nineteen hundred and ninety-eight

Touching the lives of children is perhaps one of the most important things any one human being can do.  Children are the core of our families and the future of our society.  In touching the lives of children, we touch mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, grandmothers and grandfathers.  Children are the heart strings of our lives and the seeds that will become the "Redwoods" of our tomorrow.  Through our children we will stand tall for eternity.

Dr. Beckwith, a pediatric pathologist at the Loma Linda University School of Medicine, is an incredible physician who touches the lives of people around the globe through his work.  Dr. Beckwith has made significant contributions in three areas of medicine: 1) Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in clarifying this diagnosis and more  importantly in identifying factors that support the diagnosis and factors that exclude the diagnosis; 2) Identifying and describing the features that define the syndrome bearing his name--The Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome; and 3) Founding and maintaining the pathology arm of the National Wilms Tumor Registry.  This has allowed him to identify the histologic features that provide the basis of a rational pathologic classification of childhood renal tumors, which in turn, has greatly improved treatment protocols.

Dr. Beckwith was a principal member of the SIDS Research Team at Children's Hospital and the University of Washington, Seattle, from 1964 to 1984.   He has authored or co-authored numerous research publications on SIDS.   Additionally, he has authored or co-authored five books on monographs including the new AFIP fascicle on kidney tumors as well as 35 book chapters and approximately 150 papers.  Dr. Beckwith has been a director of the National Wilms Tumor Registry since its founding and is an international authority on pediatric neoplasia.

It  is the San Bernardino County Medical Society's honor to recognize J. Bruce Beckwith, M.D., for his considerable contributions to the medical profession, by proudly presenting to him the William L. Cover, M.D. Award for Outstanding Contribution to Medicine.
