SBCMS and CMA have Medical Student representatives on many committees. Serving on a committee is an invaluable experience that allows participants to network with other members and plays a role in the development of SBCMS/CMA policies and positions. The time commitment varies depending on the committee, which usually meets two to four times per year, sometimes by conference call.
The student office term on any SBCMS or CMA committee or the SBCMS Student voting board seat is one year. Student incumbents are eligible for reappointment provided they are still enrolled in school. They are ranked, however, along with all new nominees. Qualified students are encouraged to apply for any committee, even those with incumbent representatives. Students appointed to a committee or the SBCMS Board must be a member of the SBCMS and the CMA.
Residents
Both the SBCMS and CMA have Resident representatives on many committees. Serving on a committee is an invaluable experience that allows participants to network with other members and plays a role in the development of SBCMS/CMA policies and positions. The time commitment varies depending on the committee, which usually meets two to four times per year, sometimes by conference call.
The CMA-Resident Fellow Section (RFS) represents thousands of residents in California. The CMA-RFS Governing Council meets four times a year, and they attend the CMA House of Delegates every October to fight for issues that are important to residents. They send a delegation of residents to the AMA Resident and Fellow Section meeting and AMA House of Delegates held twice a year. There can be no greater privilege than being the voice for all residents throughout California.

Young Physicians
SBCMS and CMA have a number of leadership opportunities for early career physicians. The only pre-requisite for nomination are that the candidate be a young physician (under the age of 40 or within the first eight years of practice, whichever occurs latest) and that the physician be an SBCMS/CMA member.
Young Physician representatives serve on many committees including a voting seat on the SBCMS Board of Directors. The office term on any SBCMS or CMA committee or the SBCMS Young Physician board seat is one year.
