Physician, Citizen, and Presidential Awards

Physician Recognition

SBCMS members were given the opportunity to recognize excellence right here in our county by nominating a colleague or citizen who has:

  • Made a significant contribution to the healthcare field.
  • Displayed extraordinary professional competence.
  • Been active within SBCMS.
  • Been active in health promotion and disease prevention through public speaking presentations and/or involvement with community organizations; or
  • Made charitable, benevolent and humane gifts or paticipated in acts demonstrating a desire to help mankind.

The 2017 SBCMS Outstanding Physicians, Citizen and Presidential awards were presented at our annual Installation of Officers on June 23, 2017 at the Mission Inn Hotel & Spa.  The winners were as follows:

  • Bert "Hans" Davidson, M.D., Ph.D. is the recipient of the 2017 Nicholas P. Krikes, M.D. Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Medical Society - This award is given for sustained interest and participation in one or more activities of the Society over and above that expected by the membership at large.
  • Dennis Hwang, M.D. is the recipient the 2017 William L. Cover, M.D. Award for Outstanding Contribution to Medicine - This award is bestowed upon a physician member who has displayed forward-looking, pioneering ideas, enterprise, enthusiasm and prolonged professional stature and abilities.
  • Phong K. Nguyen, M.D. is the recipient of the 2017 Merlin A. Hendrickson, M.D. Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Community - This award is given to the outstanding member who has displayed sustained interest and participation in one or more community activities over and above that expected of the membership at large.
  • Matt Gomez is the recipient of the 2017 Outstanding Citizen Award - This award is presented to a lay person who has:
    • exhibited sustained interest and participation in one or more medically related activities which has benefited the members of the community, and/or
    • who has demonstrated outstanding devotion to community work, and/or
    • who has devoted a career of service to the Inland Empire.Presentations
  • Thelma Z. Korpman, M.D. is the recipient of the 2017 Presidential Award - This award is granted to an individual of exemplary character and commitment to the mission and purpose of the Medical Society who embodies aspects of health education and research, the care and well-being of patients, protection of the public health, a commitment to the development of future physicians, a philanthropic focus, and promotes the political and fraternal goals of the Medical Society.
