Network of Ethnic Physician Organizations Announces 2017 Building Healthy Communities Summit The Network of Ethnic Physician Organizations (NEPO), representing over 45 ethnic physician organizations, in conjunction with the California Medical Association (CMA) and the CMA Foundation, today announced the 2017 Building Healthy Communities Summit will be held October 19-20 in Anaheim, California. Medical students, residents and fellows invited to submit research abstracts and poster The California Medical Association (CMA) and Network of Ethnic Physician Organizations (NEPO) are hosting a joint annual poster session to showcase research by medical students, residents and fellows across California. All medical students, residents and fellows in the state are invited to submit abstracts for their original research, regardless of membership status. Students who serve marginalized and underserved populations are strongly encouraged to apply. Research categories include basic science, clinical research, clinical vignette, health policy, and social science research. Applicants may only submit one abstract with a 350 word limit, and must explain the relevance of their research to health policy. The deadline is August 14, 2017, at 11:59 p.m. PST. The poster session will take place Friday, October 20, 2017, in conjunction with the CMA House of Delegates and the NEPO Building Healthy Communities Summit, both being held at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim. CMA Foundation recruiting Climate Change Champions As part of a two-year, statewide initiative focused on increasing health provider knowledge about climate change, the California Medical Association (CMA) Foundation is recruiting physicians and other providers to be Climate Change Champions. This initiative will expand the diversity of voices speaking about the impacts of climate change on health. By mobilizing health provider champions, the project aims to increase public understanding that climate change is an important public health issue and to build public support for climate change solutions. The CMA Foundation and the Network of Ethnic Physician Organizations (NEPO) were awarded a Climate Change and Health grant in partnership with the Public Health Institute and the National Medical Association. With the help and leadership of physicians and other health care providers and local ethnic physician organizations, we also hope to increase the relevancy of the climate change message to the cultural experience of communities of color. Climate Change Champions will receive: Media training Advocacy training Coaching on how to speak about climate change to various audiences Information on how climate change impacts health The CMA Foundation will work alongside Climate Change Champions to address climate change at the community level through the use of in-person presentations, segments on television and radio shows, letters to the editor and op-eds in local media (including ethnic media), and social media. Sugar-sweetened drinks responsible for 25,000 U.S. deaths each year Research published in the American Heart Association’s journal, Circulation, concluded that sugary beverages cause the deaths of 25,000 Americans each year through their contributions to obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Globally, sugary drinks contribute to 180,000 deaths each year, with the highest death rate in Mexico. The U.S. ranked second. The study’s authors examined beverage consumption through national dietary surveys gathered by 51 countries from 1980 to 2010. After estimating how sugar-sweetened beverages contribute toward obesity, and how obesity contributes toward various diseases, the researchers were able to conclude how many deaths from those diseases were due to sugary drinks. "This is not complicated," Dariush Mozaffarian, M.D., senior author of the research, told the Los Angeles Times. “There are no health benefits from sugar-sweetened beverages, and the potential impact of reducing consumption is saving tens of thousands of deaths each year." Dr. Mozaffarian also serves as dean of Tuft University's Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy. The study on sugary beverages did not examine the effects on children consuming these beverages, but study coauthor Gitanjali Singh predicts dire consequences for the next generation if consumption rates continue at the current rate. For more information on the study, click here. #BeatTheSweet The California Medical Association (CMA) Foundation’s #BeatTheSweet project is engaging physicians across the state to educate their patients about sugary drinks and how they increase the prospect of developing diabetes. The CMA Foundation and the Network of Ethnic Physician Organizations (NEPO) are both sponsoring the campaign with funding from the California Endowment. As part of the campaign, physicians can request a poster for their offices that shows a large can of soda with the lettering “Type 2 Diabetes” and “Did you know that one junk drink a day can increase your risk of Type 2 diabetes by 25 percent?” Physicians are encouraged to place the poster in their waiting rooms where patients can see it to help open a dialog on the topic of sugary drinks and their effects on health. Physicians are also asked to take pictures of themselves engaged in conversations with their patients and post them to social media, like Twitter or Facebook, with the hashtags #BeatTheSweet and/or #SugarlessPour.
